Leonard Den Houter was born in Cascade, Michigan in 1948, the oldest son of Edith and John Den Houter. He graduated from the Forest Hills Schools in 1966 and attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan with degrees in Psychology and Religion. He then earned a Masters of Divinity from Western Theological Seminary in 1972. Instead of pursuing ordination, he took the path of Social Work and worked for the Department of Social Services from 1972 to 1982. During his years as a Social Worker, he pursued a law degree and graduated from Cooley Law School in 1980. He then became an Administrative Law Judge and worked for the State of Michigan in that capacity from 1983 to 2003. Len died in June of 2006. He was a passionate reader especially in the areas of Theology and Psychology.
As a legacy to her late husband, Kathryn Den Houter established Oak Hill Place to continue the dynamic resolution of problems in our society. This nonprofit corporation is the result of 31 years of conversations that she and Len had together about mental health, spiritual wellness, and how to raise high functioning children in a dysfunctional world. They shared an unshakable faith in Jesus Christ and the transformational healing that can come from seeking God's perfect will. Even in his death, Len’s ideas will continue to be a light that will forever challenge the darkness of this world. Oak Hill Place is their offering to the world. The Leonard H. Den Houter Memorial Scholarship Fund financially supports individuals that desire to attend the Breakthrough Training. This transformational event has been developed by The Association for Christian Character Development (ACCD), and is a powerful and life-changing experience.
